IXPs face heavy pressure from the rapid and evolving growth of Internet traffic. The rise of bandwidth-intensive content and applications, such as streaming video, is straining network capacity while traffic patterns continue to become more complex and unpredictable. Legacy network architectures based on VLANs and Layer 2 protocols are not able to scale the number or size of their connections or offer new advanced services, threatening to leave IXPs unable to keep up with massive bandwidth and application needs.

As the peering fabric that interconnects ISPs, an IXP's port and bandwidth capacity, specifically for high-density 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and 100 GbE with scalable LAG, are crucial for maintaining and increasing their customer base. With their customers demanding more cost-effective 10 GbE and, increasingly, 100 GbE connections, IXPs require a highly flexible and scalable network to support them. Additionally, their ISP customers seek more high-value services.
