In 2015, the way people built data centers changed. That’s because servers began shipping with network acceleration functions included with the standard bill of materials.

What does that mean for the future of your data center? Instead of rows of racks with stacks of compute elements, your data center will essentially contain racks of line cards in a distributed router. It’s a completely new data center model. And the key to taking advantage of it is an operating system designed to leverage your commodity hardware.

We’ve created that operating system. We call it a multilayer acceleration architecture. It lets you replace expensive, proprietary network hardware with commodity compute hardware that runs network services with high-speed software that can leverage hardware offload. With that, you’ll be able to use software services to leverage the existing hardware forwarding planes in your network, treating them as line cards in a distributed system.

It’s a less expensive, more customized approach than today’s model, and it will help you better serve your customers and your own business.

Multilayer acceleration architecture               

Our multilayer acceleration architecture combines software control plane, software data plane, and controller functions.

The software control plane offers easily programmable switch and router functionality. It is the brains of the distributed system, offering configuration and management services for the distributed router.  That layer of functionality allows our NFV products for routing, load balancing, application delivery, and visibility and analytics to run as services on commodity compute platforms.

The software data plane is implemented on a multicore packet pipeline that gives you high-speed parallel computing for packet forwarding. Then your services—firewall, NAT, basic QoS—run on top of that. And we’ve architected those layers of services to maintain a level of performance that you would expect in a data center environment.

The controller is responsible for network-wide business policy, and managing that policy across multiple functions and devices. It communicates with the control plane elements inside the data center using standard protocols, and with the software control plane of our Brocade vRouter.

Together, these elements create a single platform with high acceleration primitives that can accept plug-in services, while leveraging the existing hardware forwarding planes in your data center. This is the architecture that makes the Brocade vRouter far and away the fastest commercial deployment software router in the world. It’s the architecture that can bring software flexibility to your networking functions at a very high speed, using a common platform. And it’s the architecture that can enable a new era in your data center that reduces costs, increases business agility, and improves the user experience.
