The Brocade Professional Mainframe Storage Networking Architect 2017 exam tests the technical and process information needed to design, deploy, manage, and troubleshoot Brocade products in a FICON environment. Topics include IBM z Systems I/O concepts, FICON Express, FICON cascading, Brocade FICON, and Brocade Gen 5/Gen 6 hardware and software.

Objectives

Candidates should be able to demonstrate these competencies:

Know and understand foundational z Systems I/O, architectures, and technology concepts

  • Define and identify z Systems I/O basics to include: functionality of z Systems host and channel subsystem architectures; z High Performance FICON (zHPF) protocol architecture; how FICON and zHPF protocol architectures are alike and different.
  • Describe z Systems channel I/O configuration to include: functionality and use of Node_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) in a z Systems; CHPID mapping tool usage requirements; z Systems Logical Channel Subsystem functionality; requirements for using a FICON channel as an FCP channel; channel sharing and spanning.

Know and understand z Systems storage network design considerations

  • Explain requirements for cascaded FICON and illustrate supported cascaded configurations.
  • Describe virtual fabrics in FICON storage networks to include: the number of supported logical switches and CUP instances; FICON logical switch definition; use of the base switch and XISL with FCIP devices; different types of logical switches with virtual fabrics; when virtual fabrics must be deployed.
  • Describe factors that influence FICON performance to include: the differences between static and dynamic routing for ISLs capabilities; effects and impact of a high latency device on a FICON SAN; Brocade trunking and its benefits; how Forward Error Correction (FEC) benefits FICON performance; elements to optimize buffer credits; the functionality of virtual channels.
  • Explain Brocade extension solutions in a z Systems environment to include; the functionality and performance benefits of FICON acceleration technology; benefits of IP Extension with mainframe virtual tape solutions; functionality and benefits of Adaptive Rate Limiting and Brocade Extension Trunking; benefits of using FCIP extension for remote data replication (RDR); benefits of Brocade IPsec; requirements to implement IPEX with virtual tape solutions.

Implement a z Systems storage network solution

  • Describe requirements to implement a FICON storage network.
  • List and validate CUP configuration definitions.
  • Explain supported cascaded configurations.
  • Implement frame routing.
  • Identify FICON storage network installation best practices.

Manage a z Systems storage network

  • Explain how to use Brocade tools to manage FICON storage networks to include: how and when to use port decommissioning; MAPS usage and benefits; benefits of using Fabric Vision; benefits of using Fabric Vision with FCIP and IP extension technologies; how to use firmware and configuration management tools.
  • Define the benefits and uses of FICON CUP to include; the requirements for CUP usage; the use and benefits of CUP diagnostics; role of CUP diagnostics in IBM Health Checker; the interrelationship between CUP diagnostics and MAPS.

Troubleshoot a z Systems storage network

  • Demonstrate how to use Display Matrix commands with the IBM Health Checker for z/OS.
  • Explain how MAPS policies and rules work and are applied to enhance troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrate how to use the RMF-7 to identify performance problems.
  • Explain the functionality and use of FOS Fabric Performance Impact Monitoring.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This exam is designed for storage and system administrators, mainframe administrators and architects, systems engineers, and technical support engineers involved with the installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Brocade products in a FICON environment.
