This exam tests the concepts and skills to install Fibre Channel switches and complete the basic configuration of such features as ISLs, trunking, zoning, and firmware upgrades. The exam also tests basic troubleshooting and SAN management.

OBJECTIVES

Candidates should be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

Know and understand foundational SAN concepts

  • Know and understand basic Fibre Channel (FC) concepts to include:
    • Differentiate among Fibre Channel protocol layers 0-4
    • Describe the FC login process; fields and contents of a FC frame
    • Define well-known FC addresses and FC embedded services; use of the domain ID; characteristics of FC data flow; characteristics and use of worldwide names (WWNs); use of fill worlds and primitives on a FC link
    • Explain FC 24-bit addressing; basic FSPF concepts
  • Know and understand basic SAN concepts to include:
    • Describe Brocade zoning best practices and explain long distance ISL considerations
    • Define and apply fabric merge concept rules; concepts and benefits of SAN data
  • Know and understand port types
    • Define the differences among D, E, F, G, M, N, SIM and U ports

Implement a SAN solution

  • Basic installation and configuration of a SAN solution include:
    • Establish serial port connectivity
    • Explain Brocade implementation of Virtual Channels; basic Brocade CLI behavior
    • Determine connectivity and install ISLs/ICLs if needed; configure SNMP and save the switch configuration
  • Configure device security in a SAN solution include:
    • Configure admin and user accounts; audit log options
    • Implement security policies; restrict access to the switch using IP filter policy
  • Configure zoning and long distance links in a SAN solution include:
    • Create aliases and zones; configure zoning using CLI, BNA, and WebTools
    • Configure and verify long distance links; encryption and compression for long distance links

Troubleshoot and repair a SAN solution

  • Collect and interpret device log files; capture supportsave and other logs for case escalation; diagram a fabric; run basic show commands in interpret output
  • Isolate faults to include:
    • Validate device login and details using nameserver; installed licenses
    • Diagnose port initialization problems; device connectivity issues; fabric segmentation; ISL/trunking issues
    • Use ClearLink Diagnostics to test SFP, port, and cabling; filter and search BNA logs to identify SAN issues
  • Identify and replace faulty FRUs

Know and understand SAN products and solutions

  • Know and understand SAN hardware to include:
    • Define the differences between core and edge devices; shared area addressing; port groups for trunking. Identify Brocade SAN portfolio capabilities; cables and components
    • Identify Brocade SAN portfolio capabilities; cables and components
    • Explain the role of external devices; the concept and benefits of local switching; benefits and use cases for ISL in flight compression/encryption
  • Know and understand SAN features and capabilities to include:
    • Define the characteristics and benefits of trunking; license types and features
    • Explain Brocade implementation of Virtual Channels; basic Brocade CLI behavior
    • Differentiate among addressing modes

Enhance a SAN solution

  • Evaluate firmware includes:
    • Determine appropriate firmware version for the environment; upgrade firmware
    • Explain how to obtain firmware; perform a stage firmware download
  • Enable, configure, implement, and interpret MAPS
  • Optimize a SAN long distance traffic links and link performance; implement Dynamic Fabric Provisioning

Manage a SAN solution

  • Monitor a SAN solution by using BNA to discover SAN; monitoring switch health; creating BNA SAN reports and monitoring SAN logs; verifying HA status of directors
  • Maintain a SAN solution by using BNA to manage zoning; backing up, restoring and/or comparing configurations; capturing, automating, and maintaining baseline SupportSave data

TARGET AUDIENCE

This exam is designed for storage administrators, SAN administrators, system administrators, SAN architects, systems engineers, and SAN operators that are involved with configuration, change management, maintenance, monitoring, configuration, and basic SAN troubleshooting.
